That's an interesting question, I noticed too that in the "latter" tube days, some Japanese versions were made. I have a Japanese 5U4GB. Did they have good technology and were the filaments/cathodes made with an excellent quality alloy, as were the US NOS's?
Hi,
I think that GE's are the origin of 6L6's but when I was comparing the tubes, the Toshiba looked neeter.
The glass was more clear and the sase looked cleaner thats why I posted this question. The Toshiba has more magnesium.
I know that external looks does not tell the quality of the tube, but isnt it an indication??

Regardless of the appearance of these two sets of tubes, it is fairly likely that the GE will be the better sounding of the two. I've had both and while well made the Toshiba ones seemed somewhat shrill and lacking in low end in a pair of McIntosh MC30s I used to own.
