Looking to build a fun set of garage speakers for playing Rock mostly. I'm drawn to the idea of an 8" woofer matched to a 2" fullrange, just to try something different than anything I've ever done. I've narrowed it down to two flavors:
Peerless 830983 + Dayton DS215
or
SB SB65WBAC25-4 + SB SB20PFC30-8
What do you guys think?

Agree with Galu...the standard guitar speaker is a 10" so B102 will do. Faitalpro FE25 for the mid/high to match sensitivity. Garage not salon, right?
i would go with the SB Acoustics drivers.
if i was going to use something that's classed as a guitar speaker for general playback i would go with the EV 12 L

8" is definitely as big of a box as I'm willing to do.
This isn't a "guitar" speaker?? It's a speaker that can play Rock without misbehaving too badly.

other than the size being wrong the EV 12 would play Rock loud and do it well...
i did mention the SB's would be my choice for what your doing.

Only thing I find for EV 12 is a 12" woofer. Why would play music through a single 12" woofer? Are you referring to a coax?
The SB65AC is nice but only 84dB so not a good match for 90.5dB SB woofer. Might look into 8in Dayton Classic with 88dB with -5dB baffle step loss is a closer match. Or use 3FE25-8 mid tweet for matching sensitivity.
The SB woofer has a rather rough response. Maybe look at pokycone woofers. They have rather smooth response in general. What XO are you planning on using?

no i would use a full range or tweeter above it (sorry i'm just partial to that driver)!
and the sensitivity @ 100 db 1 w/1m means even a flea amp can give "rock" volume.

I had planned to cross @ 800hz, near the baffle diffraction peak, so the SB drivers would *just* match up. But I think you're right, maybe too close for comfort.
I wanted to stay with one vendor when I order, so if I go with the Dayton linked above (I think it replaced the Classic series) then I'm inclined to go with the Peerless too. Thoughts?
EDIT: looks like the Designer series only replaced some of the Classic series, and the 8" are different

How does this compare with the Peerless?

The 3FE25 is one of my favorite sounding full range drivers, as is the SB65, but the higher sensitivity of the 3FE25 really gives it an advantage when audibility is important. I think the SB65 has a higher top end, similar to an Al dome tweeter. If you want to hear the difference for yourself, check out the comparisons on my "Subjective Blind" full range driver test threads.

A better sounding top end, or just more extended on paper? Thanks for the links!
Better sounding is subjective. There is more sparkle but overall smoothness is TC9FD/TG9FD or 3FE22/25. For what it’s worth, on the round with the SB65, I personally picked it over the other drivers in a blind test.
Thanks. Was the SB65 ever compared directly with the FE25 in your shootouts?
Probably not, but I would say it comes down to personal pref as both are excellent.
You may be interested in Round 5 where more 2.5in drivers were compared.
