Gapless CD playback

There was a time when every cd player supported gapless playback ,after all it's part of the redbook standard, but now it seems to be becoming increasingly rarer .
Making matters worse manufacturer's don't seem to state this and many professional reviews tend to ignore it also.
I've had a few players over the last couple of years that sounded great untill i put Pink Floyd in the tray and discovered the player had a " feature " that inserted 2 seconds of silence between tracks that blend together.
Can anyone explain why this is now seemingly the norm? I'm assuming it has something to do with mp3 / cdr indexing ? or am i missing something , other than several hours of music spead over my cd collection .

Which CD player is it? I have never heard of this happening on a dedicated CD/DVD player component, unless autostop or similar options are on. Even the early CD RW computer drives with independent playback command on them had gapless playback. Gapless computer playback will depend on the software setting.

I first came across it a couple of years ago on a Cambridge Audio cd 10 Topaz . Manufacturer confirmed it was a ' feature ' and could not be changed. Also a few others i have owned/ tried ... Teac budget players... Saunsui... and numerous all in one type mini systems that no longer support gapless, i just wondered why the change in recent times. As at least 40 % of my music is continuous with blended/ mixed tracks it's now the first thing i attempt to clarify .
