Let's say my source is a Pearl II phono preamp or a typical dac (or even an FM tuner), and my power amp is a BA-3, will I need a line stage with gain or will a unity gain buffer do?
Hi Mr. dB
I think you might need to re-read Nels's PDF's again.
The BA-3 is essentialy, a line-stage, with ( I think ) 30dB gain.
A nice power-amp to go with this, could be any 'follower type' amplifier.
Check the BA-1 & BA-2 ( and some of Nels's 'F' amps ( I think )).
You would need to have some kind of 'volume control' in front of the BA-3.
This could be 'buffered'...
...but I think the BA-3 would be fairly happy, with just a 'passive preamp' in front of it ( ie. just an attenuator or 'pot', perhaps with some input sockets & switch ).
Not sure how much 'juice' you get out of a 'pearl'.
One of Nels's B1 buffers could be good as well.
So...
...re-read the PDF.
I think the BA-3 looks like an EXELLENT line-stage/amp-driver...
...I'm thinking to make one !
Good luck.
Cheers.
