FWIW - Intermittent RCA's

Just had a problem again and thought it might be worth a heads up.

Had a problem with the RCA SOCKETS on a few older products. Intermittent something on one channel. Traced it to the RCA input SOCKET. Then looked at some of the other sockets on other equipment. Problem has to do with the construction of the socket's "hot"; I'll call it slotted wiper tube - or fingers, that grip the hot pin on the plug. After who knows how many insertions, the tube or fingers can loosen up. The other thing I realized is on some sockets, the tube or fingers DON"T necessarily extend right out to the tip of the socket. On a few plugs I measured that their hot pin doesn't even begin to contact the socket's tube/fingers until pushed at least 8mm into the "hole"! SO, I've been routinely replacing these sockets with ones that have the tube/fingers that extend out and grip the hot side of the plug almost immediately.

Of course the ground "ring" portion of the RCA plugs can also be a problem and can also loosen up over use.

And contact cleaner(s) is/are a whole nuther thaanng.
