Hello, I want to make some speakers for a large room, 50m2, and I would like a full range design based on mark audio. I need an advice!
Thanks
Thanks
How far away do you sit ?
Types of music and volume levels ?
Min / max price ?
How wide of a listening spot at what distance ?
Any limits on box size ?

Thanks Norman, the distance would be 5 meters, the volume high, any type of music, I like the XL fruguel, but I don't know if it would be suitable, I have no size limit
fhxl with moaps 10.2 are filling my room really well with only 7W 300b mono blocs, my room is 4.5mx9m , listening sweet spot is 3m in front of speakers, speakers are 0.5m away from back wall and 1m from side walls, if I move my listening position further away I have to change my damping setup inside the cabinets to have clear and rapid non muddy bass. I listen mainly to live records from pinkfloyd to adèle...even Metalica is played relly well on them. Now if you want more, Victors on fostex 168ns are next level, maybe Hirola's on twin chr120 can fill it too but with less details in mid/upper frequencies.
Wouldn't some sort of WaW be more suitabe?. For example twin 12" bass in a box , and a Fostex FF225wk on top, with a tweeter of choice. Alsmost 3-way, but not a typical 3 -way...
Biamped, you can have volume, slam, and FR sound, all at the same time...

To offer a different idea…
A pair of Audio Nirvana Super 12” Ferrite drivers. I use a mono single 15” version and it is superb, a full range that also ‘does bass‘. I only recommend these two drivers from AN. From Mark Audio I only have experience with the 10.3 and I have a pair in large ported enclosures; they also sounds great.

AN stopped production as the owner retires, so they will be hard to get and way to expensive. He is just clearing old stock now.
Fane make great big fullrange drivers also (the Sovereighn 12-250TC) that i use in a build. And if that is not expensive for you (it's the best big one in my opinion) you still got Lii Audio, that should go loud they say (no experience but some listening and i did not like them).

Your room is smaller than mine, quite a bit smaller if it has typical ceilings.
How loud do you need to play and what power amp(s)? And you probably have a budget? Size & cash.
My room needs a WAW to denerate bass loading you can feel, but i a happy with even some of my 4” boxes. The little ones (3”), sound really good but are bass shy.
So depending on the questions above, things are pretty wide open.
I will add the comment that the MA SuperPensil for the A12p was specifically designed for a larger room than yours in New Zealand.

PS: I am sad to see an audio company die, but in the case of the ANs, none of the ones i heard were really good, one had potential, the rest were poor or worse (even after fixes does. And all too pricey. David Dicks boxes are a joke. I know BigUn likes his mono 15”, didn’t hear it. BigUn did put it into a boffle and not a factory box.

That is a huge loss, the fane doesn’t hold a ragged-treble candle to the AN. Let’s hope that David Loius Chinese supplier is a comparable alternative to the AN.AN stopped production as the owner retires, so they will be hard to get and way to expensive. He is just clearing old stock now.

yes, indeed, don’t get the wrong AN drivers, most of them are terrible, but the 12” and 15” Super drivers are outstanding.PS: I am sad to see an audio company die, but in the case of the ANs, none of the ones i heard were really good, one had potential, the rest were poor or worse (even after fixes does. Dave, I’ve heard some of your drivers and honestly, I wasn’t impressed. But you didn’t see me telling everyone how shitty they are. It is unbefitting someone in a power position such as administrator to run their mouths about commercial competitors’ products and designs. Please try to show some professionalism.
If you honestly don’t like David’s drivers and boxes, then don’t use it. There are many other diyAudio members who actually like the sound of Audio Nirvana drivers. Deal with it. I have heard some of David’s FR drivers and I find the sound to be superb - and that was with a box design suggested by David. And I don’t think I’m the only one who likes AN drivers. Even NP had some good things to say about them.

Which ones, what boxes, what ancillary equipment?

I do not wish to discuss it. It has been a while anyway. But since you asked, I'll just mention that we used a FirstWatt amp and preamp.

Fine, leave us in the dark. Without feedback we cannot improve.

Message from the owner of Audio Nirvana drivers 👍
I’ve asked David for details (data sheets) on the new drivers when available and I’ll post them.
Hey,
It’s not true, I’m not retiring.
I am making the business smaller, but will continue with my most popular speaker—a redesign of the Super 8 Ferrite ($295/pr w/free shipping) that sounds better than our Classic and alnico models.....for less than half the price.
And the best sounding speaker ever made—our totally redesigned Super 15 Ferrite ($695/pr w/free shipping) which is also better sounding than our older alnico 15’s.
I do still have a bunch of Super 12 Ferrites and Classic 12 Ferrites for sale. They are discontinued.
I would appreciate it if you would post this information if you’re ever back on those sites.
Best, David

I have an audio pal who I have done mods for, we have loaned each other gear over time, so I know that we share taste in audio. Dave sold him some 15" ferrite drivers, telling him that they are better than the Alincos. He also had the 15" Liis. He was not satisfied with the Ferrites, and eventually found some used 15" Alincos. We have no idea upon what Dave is claiming that the Ferrites sound better, but using a Lampizator Amber 3, a DS2 preamp, and various amps, the Alincos spank both the Lii's and the AN15 ferrites. The AN15 Ferrites top the Liis. I have had the Alincos for perhaps a decade and have not found anything affordable to replace them. YMMV, but I have SERIOUS doubts about the Ferrites sounding better. I do believe that they sell better at a lower price point. I cannot comment on any other drivers Dave sells, but he was touting the AN15 Alincos to me as his best, when he was selling them. Remember, this is all second hand OPINION, but I believe that it is well enough grounded to mention it. I am not trying to hurt Dave, his AN15 Alinco drivers have catapulted my listening pleasure. That said, I don't believe that truth is malleable. I have misspent many thousands due to opinions I later found grave flaws in. I run a Lampizator Amber 3 with a converter allowing me to use a 6SN7, I have bypassed the output caps with VHAudio's ODAM, and CuTF V-Caps. It turns it into a fantastic DAC, into a Don Sachs DS2 with all the most important updates since its purchase, into a ML 27.5, into the AN15 Alincos. All seriously good equipment. Always remember YMMV.
