I could never figure out what the tolerance actually was.

For example the 1k resistors varied from:
620,680,750,790, 820,850,910, 1k, 1,1k, 1,2k 1,3k, 1,4k 1,5k 1,6k, 1,7k 1,8k 2,2k 2,4k

I never used them for fear they would continue to drift until it
destroyed what ever I put them in.

Because of that fact SOVIET MILITARY ELECTRONIC by 40% better than other in the world!!! All circuits in Soviet university we are calculated with 40%
tolerance! 40%, Caaaarl!!! 🙂

SyncTronX, sure you have standart not MIL spec resistors, BTW MIL spec Soviet resistors are good quality and tolerance.

It is hard to believe. Today I measured 14 pieces 1kohm 0,5W MLT resistors
5% tolerance and result is: 976, 977,986, 986, 986, 986, 990, 997, 1001, 1001, 1004, 1009, 1011, 1013 Ohm. So real tolerance is from -2,4% to +1,3%.
Maybe your resistors were chinese counterfeits, not genuine russian military MLT's.

Maybe the prices asked are reasonable, but possible buyers should be informed, that no ex-soviet diyer would recommend to use MLT resistors at sound-critical places (like grids, plates, gates, draines, NFB dividers, etc.). Because of non-audiophile quality contacts between end caps and resistive layer. Sound quality issues are related with materials science quite a lot.
Soviet audiophile quality resistors are
S2-10 (metal film)
MRX (wire wound)
PTMN (wire wound)
BLP (carbon-boron resistive layer)
ULI (carbon)
Especially S2-10 have good quality silver alloy based contacs, and UHF quality design.
