This is an EVM-1702 evaluation board from Burr-Brown, with quite a bit of engineering you won't normally find on any other DAC board. This was Burr-Browns all out high performance design.
It uses 4 paralleled 20 bit PCM1702 DACs per channel with 28 electrolytic caps per DAC bank. Specs read -100db THD+N, dynamic range of 112db and a S/N ration of 118db.
The decoder and DACS are connected via optoisolators. Less ground noise, more jitter? Want to find out?
OPA627APs are used in the I/V section (one per side). OPA2640APs are in the post 2nd order LPF opamp and output driver (one per side).
There is an on-board, discrete ripple filter for the +/-5V power supply.
Inputs include S/PDIF, coax and optical.
The decoder is a Pacific Microsonic PMD100, which will also decode HDCDs. Another site disparaged the PMD, but said the BB1704 would be much better and might fit.
There is a section already layed out for a better PLL section. There is also another section with via holes for your output driver. I couldn't find their chip recomendation for the PLL section so I never did add or alter anything on the board. I recommend doing both.
The board is relatively large - 297mm x 210mm. - 8" x 11.5" with lots of room to probe/ add/subtract/measure.
The sampling rate is limited to 32khz to 48khz.
The output is 2Vrms for normal CD and half that for an HDCD.
The digital section requires 5V/180ma typical.
The DAC section requires +5V/+64ma typical,-5V/-200ma typical.
The analog section requires +/-8V to +/-18V/+/-27ma max.
I used it lightly for a couple of years but since I didn't improve it, I never built a case for it and don't use it anymore.
