front panel push-button

Hello everybody,

I am starting to think about a new look for my new preamp. It will be controlled from the micropros and I would like to put some push buttons for source select, mute etc... Since I hate wiring I would like to use some PCB push buttons that will be on the same board as LCD display.

What push buttons do you use? I am looking for some round ones, metal if possible, not overpriced. If there is a different hight that is a bonus.

Plastic could be usefull but if they have nice feel to it.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance,
Pred

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I was wondering the same thing -- only my preference would be for buttons with indicator LEDs built in. Round or rectangular, does anyone know of some great looking momentary switches that might be suitable?

Regards,
Scott

What about MEC

I was just browsing last night and they seem nice, but are all plastic and I am not sure how they will "feel" when used. They are cheap though.

I used some like these before but like 8EUR are chepest and most of them with round led are like 15-30EUR. And you have to wire so no soldering on the PCB...

high end companies???

Thank you for the tactile switches tip, but all I have found have plastic top 🙁

I can't belive that VTL, Meridian,EAR, Mcintosh and other high end companies are using plastic top switches? I never touched one but I think that they look metalic. Is it possible that they make them custom. I do not think so...

McIntosh buttons are nice, but plastic. ML are custom and so were the nice ones used by Sonic Frontiers.
I use to deal with all these companies and I can assure you.

My preference would be for small rectangular buttons (perhaps 8mm wide by 16mm high) that could be grouped together somehow, perhaps by soldering onto a breadboard. Each button would be a momentary switch and have a built-in LED. The original Jeff Rowland Coherence I preamp had this sort of arrangement, and it looked very attractive (oddly, the photo of the Coherence I on Rowland's site is awful: http://www.jeffrowland.com/img/Coherence1-front.jpg).

Does anyone know if switches like these are available? I'm going to ask Rowland and will post any helpful response they provide.

As as I know, these buttons are very dear in your contry.
These bottons are ring-illuminated bottons, copper body with nicle-plated & gold-plated,it's worthy of trying.

Yes I know some are made here and some in China as well. But they come into the group of "antivandal" and are quite expencive. I used one on my amp, but there I had only one button. If I have to use more that would be quite an expencive front pannel 🙁

The anti-vandal type from bulgin look very good but are too expensive and also at about 20mm diameter a bit too large to look good on hi-fi unless maybe for a power button on an amplifier. Anyone else come across some nice small push buttons??
