Fostex FE126E reference design opinions

It’s a strange coincidence you posted this today. I just printed out those plans and ordered the drivers from Madisound. I hope to have them built in a few weeks. I was looking for a nice low budget, small footprint, higher sensitivity design. And this seemed to fit the bill. I think it looks pretty interesting. I hope someone who has already built this would comment.

Not the same driver but to a certain extent similar, an FE164 which has been discontinued. With this one i fine tuned it on a 25L BR enclosure to 56 Hz using Winsid. The original Fostex suggestion for this BR did not sound well.

After the tuning is a different animal with excellent bass and overall imagining with no BSC. Still some small peaks here and there but quite listenable and the best speaker I’ve made so far. Well worth the (small) effort. In the future I might do some nicer cabinets for them.

The FE166 looks as a better alternative and well suited to a horn/BR. Hope this project results in an excellent speaker and will be interested to hear the results.

Cheers…

fe126e BR

Hi, I've built the BR recommended by fostex (see the My fe126e experiences-thread).

It's an excellent speaker, however you have to decide what's most important to you:

a) the speaker going low - but lacking weight/"body" in instruments/voices.

b) instruments/voices with proper "body"/weight, but with f3 at 100 Hz.

I prefer the b).

Playing around with notch filters, I originally started with two parallel notch filters, put one after the other - to dampen the 6db peak at 6.5 kHz - however the sound became too boring.

One parallel notch filter is enough. I used the values

R = 2,7 ohm
L = 0,12 mH
C = 4,7 uF

However I consider lowering the R, resulting in a gentler rolloff.

Best regards
Jesper

126 vs 127

I have been trying to make a choice between 126 and 127 and came up with 127. For me it is more suitable for a TL design and high frequency response looks to be more balanced. The result is a well balanced sound and good low end extension. The upper bass response gives the sound a strong feel. You can not go very loud with these drives (disco levels) but they full fill a room of 35 meters square.

I don't think that link you are using is for the FE126E speaker. It looks similar though. It might be easier to modify the recommended FE126E BR box for twin drivers.

RECOMMENDED ENCLOSURE

I'm no expert but I think you would just need to double the volume of the recommended box and then calculate the port needed to keep it tuned to the same frequency.
