Hi to all,
Fostex just announced a release of new limited edition 10cm full range driver – FE103En-S.

Therefore I would like to ask competent forum members a qustion: is it possible to use these new drivers in Fe108eSigma reccomended enclosures without modifications (I already have them with the Fe108eSigmas but a bit more sensitive speakers would be beneficial for my amps).
The Fs of new driver is 72Hz, Qts = 0.2.
You can look for further info here
http://www.fostex.jp/user_file/fostex-sh/etc/FE103En-S_Release.pdf

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Is it just me or is that one of the more difficult to read .pdf's? 😉

I get $173 and $182 AUD. Not terribly expensive as I personally think many drivers are quite cheap anyway -- excluding the more esoteric ones. Anyway, blame MJK's OB projects for this release 😀

Info on all the new FExx6En drivers... i'm not happy they poached my suffixes 🙁 -- have been leasking out for about 6 months. At this point it also looks like FExx7 may just disappear, given the dearth of info... maybe time so start stocking up for your Fonken.

The Fe127e is now listed as no longer available on Madisound. It's not even listed on the 4 inch fullrange driver page any more.

I confirmed this morning that they were not able to secure stock before they were axed. FE167e & FE207e are gone too (don't know about stock). No replacements in site.

I have some (not many), have to decide how many to keep for my own use and how many to free up for resale.

Time for a letter writing campaign to Fostex?

The closest equivalent is probably the EL70 (more bottom, top, less forward in the mids, with perhaps not quite the finese, but they keep getting better with time).

The FE127e has been a standby for years now.

Maybe we will see something of a performance shootout between Fostex and Alpair in this forum when things get going.

well, the "e" series were replacement/upgrades to previous models, and Fostex certainly takes the "we reserve the right..." seriously

perhaps we'll find that the new published specs for Fostex are closer to real world performance than previously, and that the actual sonic differences for nominally same models is nothing to worry about

or not

who frackin knows yet

Bummer. I guess I won't be building any FE167 Fonkens.:bawling:

It would be interesting to know why they are dropping these drivers. Is it strictly do to sales?

I think you'd have a better chance at
- reconciling a super majority vote on Health Care Reform, or
- getting a Canadian to stop saying, "sorry about those Gold Medals, eh"

Indeed, Mark certainly seems to understand and actually value the opinions / requirements of his customer base, while for Fostex the DIY market is a tiny fraction of their business model ... "let them eat cake"

never say never, there will likely be a series of new models flowing through the supply pipeline, quite likely by the time many of us get around to final decisions and cutting wood for our next project(s)

probably the demise of CRT video displays negating the requirement for shielded versions, and anytime a manufacturer can streamline even pennies on tooling and production steps it can make for a better bottom line

not necessarily happier customers, but see my earlier pastry comment

If Madisound has any left i will probably get some (if Bob Brines hasn't already cleaned them out). There is a spare pair of F167 at Chris, if you want to audition.

From the limited amount of info that has been extracted, it goes like this, "CRTs are no more, so the shielded drivers can go", not realizing that no-one cared about that bit anyway.

With drivers suited mostly to horns only available i expect they'll see driver sales fall...

From measured data coming out of Madisound on a single sample pair, FR126En is essentially the same T/S despite the (inconsistent) new data.

New FExx6En will appear at Madisound as old stock dissappears. FE206En already there.

FExx6En data sheets [1.8 MB]

>>> a performance shootout between Fostex and Alpair...

Yes! I would add Tangband, Dayton, Jordan, etc. in their best possible cabinets behind a black curtain and rate them all over several six packs!

Imagine a Fostex 4" in a well designed back horn vs a Jordan in its best cabinet vs a TB in it's best, etc...

Some people rate six packs over everything.
🙄

But back on topic perhaps just an open baffle used for any and all would level the competition problem. Cost is also a factor. The Alpairs have proved to be a value buy. If Fostex is making "new and improved" simply to raise prices (like detergent or cake mix) then we in the community will have more variables to calculate.
