I just received a request to consider joining the editorial board of a forestry magazine "based on my record of contributions in the field". As my published work in this field is precisely zero, I can only assume that either this is a spoof or it is one of the many low quality internet 'learned' journals which seem to be springing up like weeds in every field of human endeavour.
Has anyone else been invited to participate in something apparently serious but actually rather silly for which they are totally unqualified?

Tell them yes. We can do it together and make stuff up.
Do they realise the importance of forest acoustics...about its profound effects on every aspect of everything in forests?
Do they know the effects of music on forest productivity? Do they even know how to play music to a forest?
We can help, and we're only moderately expensive.

Hi, the best advice is to ignore it, & Any/All others from them & Anyone else. I guarantee it's a SCAM, which could also "possibly" have come with Malware attached in one of Many forms. Make sure you're AV etc is up to date, & do a Full HD scan.
Why did you open an email from someone you don't know ?

I assumed, probably correctly, that the scam is being played on people who will subsequently submit papers to what they think is an esteemed journal. Or it could be that prospective authors know it is junk but at least it will publish their weak papers so it will look good on their CV to anyone not in the know.
Of course if they happened, by luck, to ask someone who is a minor expert in the appropriate field then his ego may cause him to sign up and he can then describe himself as a journal editor. He might not notice his colleagues sniggering in the corner.
We could end up with an alternative universe of people who study at a non-university, gain a non-degree, and then carry out non-research which they publish in a non-journal. Sadly, some of them might not realise this is happening - their future employers might not either.
