Fixing up Philips 9710

Hello all,

Made a nice trift find, a speaker box with Philips 9710 full range driver! Too bad it's a bit banged up, something has broken the surround. I'm going to repair this driver, but I require some info on what would be good for repairing the surround. I think the paper cone is easy to repair with a drop of normal PVA glue (wood glue). What kind of stuff would you recommend for the paper surround? Pictures of the driver attached.

Hi, I found a similar pair...though they're different as they have the magnet mounted frontally ! The surround wasn't broke but very thinned and transparent. You can fix the crack with PVA glue but don't use it along the surround because it hardens.
I used black type of silicon and after ...well..uhm...twenty years they're still good -and soft. You have to make a very thin layer with the silicone and use a screwdriver or a nail! to follow the pleats

Hi,

YMMV but if you put one layer of tissue paper behind
and just use PVA you should be fine. PVA doesn't
harden, * and the thick cone will soak up much
of the PVA if its sparingly applied to the problem,
leaving the surround PVA relatively quite thin.

The missing outside edge should be tackled first,
and the damage moved back to nearer aligned.
Just wet the rest of the area moving it back.
Sometimes you must have tissue paper,
other times it aligns so you don't need it.

I've fixed several damages paper cones with PVA,
but the benefit of experience is hard to convey.

* Well the stuff I use is clearly still quite flexible
when I have to peel it off to clear the nozzle.

Thanks for the advices. I fixed the rip outside of the surround and in the cone with PVA glue and it seemed to work wonders. I'm very hesitant about applying PVA glue to the surround itself though. Instead, I wonder if silicone would be good for fixing such a damage as it's very flexible. Anyone got experience with this approach?

Hi,

PVA will be fine, for a thin surround you only need a tiny amount.

I have a few paper surround drivers disassembled from 80s radios to test stuff like this. I bought some clear silicone and at the moment I'm applying silicone to one driver and PVA to other to see what it will do to the surround. I'll see which does better and settle with that one for the 9710. I got another unit from mail today, which makes me a proud owner of a pair. Sadly, both got similar tear in surround.

One thing I quickly noticed that if you want to apply silicone to paper surrounds, you got to either be very careful or apply to the back of the surround where it can't be seen. Even though I was being careful I still managed to mess the cone a bit with it.
