Does anyone have any suggestions? I was kinda thinking about a pair of studio monitors and a sub to work with them.

I'm pretty keen to get into space projects. I think to start I'll build a human outstation on Pluto.
Are you implying that as a first project 2 monitors+sub would be too ambitious?

Yes. Maybe start by building some kits where the designer has presumably correctly applied several years experience in physics, acoustics, mechanical and electrical engineering, etc. Once built plenty of experience can be gained by experimenting with modifications and upgrades. Thanks for the clarification. I should have been more clear that I was not planning on designing them. Saving that for down the road.
I will second Johnmath's suggestion. You can learn so much from building those BR-1's. I have two pairs so I learned twice as much. Just take a look at the assembly manual. It is a mini course in speaker building.
