Hi bro, not many uk diyers out there.i have found it hard to get parts myself so i have started at the bottom.i used the innards out of an ohp from ebay for around £30 and you can buy spare bulbs and magnifiers which can be used as copy lenses from places like maplin electronics.not to mention all the other components you can buy there. go to an optician or a stationary store and buy page magnifiers for fresnels and then its just the screen.as i said i started at the bottom and used a psone lcd again from ebay. the quality isnt amazing but a 60 inch picture for around £80-£100 and a bit of time isnt too bad. also the psone screen is soooooooooo easy to work with. hope this helps and if you find anything better, let me know cos im loking too.

just one quick question with those varifocal odbjective lens which has a 280-330 focal do i put it that distance away from the lcd?

how do determine which the best position

Hi Sheoul,

I built one a 5 months back and got my projection lens and fresnels from Lumenlab.com. Took about 1 week for delivery. I would have ordered from 3dlens.com but they looked a bit dodgy at the time, but have very competitive prices for fresnels. I may look at them again if any of my fresnels break.

As for Metal Halide lighting, I got a 250MH IP20 Low Bay Flood Light from fastlight.co.uk for about £55 and ripped the parts out.

My LCD wasn't anything special just a standard 7" lilliput car TV/Monitor...for about £60 from HK when I was on holiday. Works pretty well and I have about 70" watchable screen.

Hope that helps.

Good luck with it.

lens distances

>is that exclusiv-online trustworthy?

I don't know from direct experience. I have not bought anything from them, but they have been around for quite a while. I have not read any customer complaints about them on the various DIY projection boards (unlike some other DIY stores!) Any customers care to give feedback? Make sure you talk to them about picking up parts. Most online DIY projection stores do not have a "real" store you can visit.

>do i put it that distance away from the lcd?

If you put a projection lens with a fl of 300 mm exactly that distance from the LCD, then it would focus an image at infinity. You need to move it a bit further away from the LCD if your screen is closer. 😀

You can calculate it: (All using the same units.)

1/lens fl = 1/throw distance + 1/LCD to lens

So if your throw distance is 3 meters, and your lens fl is 300 mm, then:

1/300 = 1/3000 + 1/LCD to lens

LCD to lens = 333 mm

So now you see why people use a 330 mm fl fresnel with their 300 mm fl OHP lens. Or a 550 mm fresnel with their 450 mm long-throw lens.

I'm in the UK.

I have used ebay as a good source of parts. I got a PS1 LCD for £27 and an Overhead Projector for £15.

Higher spec OHPs can be bought second hand on ebay, and you can easily get the parts from them.

There should be several places where you can get Metal Halide lights. I read on another forum that you are best off making a list of what parts you need and then buying them from several different manufacturers / sellers. Apparently, this can be cheaper because you are not buying them in a kit, but as I am just using the Halogen light from my OHP, I don't really know much about where to get light.

Hope that helps
