FE206ES-R phase plugs

Hi all!
After a few months of listening to the 206esr I came to the conclusion that they could benifit from the addition of phase plugs. I had tried them in the regular 206 about a year ago and was pleased with the results. I robbed the old 206's of their plugs, cut the esr dust caps, and popped them in. Well so much for that, they are about 12mm too short for the new driver. I left them in but they didnt make much difference. I sent an email to Dave at Planet10 with my problem and he fixed me right up. I recieved a prototype pair of plugs in about 2 weeks!

I've been playing them for just over a week now, doing A-B tests and trying different amps to get a good feel for the differences. The first thing I found is listening to the same song 5 times in a row isnt good for home relations! Ok, now for the real stuff.

I dont think the esr has as much to fix as the regular 206 but they do have some of the same issue's such as some shoutyness and harshness in the upper mids. Adding the plugs made them smoother and even easier to listen to. The little shout that I kept hearing was gone and was much clearer with better deffinition and staging. The part I dont get is why does the bass sound better? I dont understand what is happening there but the bass does sound clearer and more defined. Is it just easier to hear with the upper mids fixed? Anyway, I'm pleased with the new phase plugs😎 :drink:
I guess I should mention the hardware used. Amps are a 45SET and a heavily modified Dynaco SCA35. Pre-amp is a Hafler 110

This may have something to do with the added mass of the phase plug, now connected to the cone assembly, thereby lowering fs slightly. I'm sure Dave could clarify this relationship.

I thought about that but most of the bass comes from the horn mouth
(fostex 208 sigma cabs) so it just doesnt add up. Am I missing something?

Yes Dave, I think the phase plugs are as much a success as the original 206 plug.

I just came from another long, loud (for a 45set amp) session and I'm convinced even more that I just couldnt live without the new plugs.🙂

The phase plugs attach to the pole-piece. The cone gets lighter by the weight of the removed dustcap.

With a dustcap you have a volume of air that is being compressed/decompressed that will act a like a damper, with the phase plugs you will have a bit of laminar flow in the coil/phase plug gap. I have no idea if that has anything to do with it -- just an observation.
