Hello everybody,
Im sure you already discussed some of it, but please I have a pair of the fostex fe167e at home and well first I thought to build the Chilli changs than I have got stuck with the cutting schedule esp. with the bracings. I thought to build the recommendet fostex basreflex but have god bad review on that so finaly im stuck.
Good review have so far I found: Chilli Chang, Metronome and the FT-1600 MkII
As I have alsolutely no experience and have never done such a thing im looking for advice. Please give me some recommendation. What would be the best allaround construction?
Thanks

I am a novice and have just finished the woodwork for the FT1600mkII. It was quite a challange for someone who hasnt really done any woodwork (ever!) but they have come out looking ok. Veneering next.....
I've heard the Brines FT-1600 Mk-II (and own the LT-2000) and it's fantastic and very compact, easy to position and very space-friendly. The bass is lean and clean, plenty deep for acoustic music and not boomy to my ears.
I've heard three sets of Scottmoose double-mouth horn/BVR's. In general, they energize the air differently and have a big soundstage. My favorite is Harvey but the Maiko is also really nice. They take up more space (physically, and you have to sit back from them a bit) so maybe your room should decide?
It's hard for me to imagine you going wrong either way, especially with that driver (which I personally prefer to the 8" FE207E; the 8" has more bass but the 6" is sweeter to my ears).
I haven't had the pleasure of hearing the Met's or hm's designs yet.

Compact? the ones i built are massive!
Not on your list is the Fonken167. True it is a more challenging build then the ML-TL (simpliest) or the Chang. I've not heard the Chang, but in comparison the ML-TL bass seems a bit fat & uncontrolled.

Hi adamus, I guess it's just the footprint that's compact. 🙂 I have BiB's and huge OB's in the living room which make everything look small.
Ys, I too found the FT1600 bass a bit loose for my taste, and the cabs were too large (in MY room!).
Still, I enjoyed my time with them.
I really liked the "Demetri's" I heard, though.

Hi doorman, interesting! May I ask:
(a) if you tried adjusting the damping
(b) were they near the wall(s) or pulled out?
(c) what did you eventually settle on that had bass more to your liking? (Was it the Demetris?)
Thanks in advance!

Hi RJ: I no longer have the FT1600's but I hope I didn't come across as if I didn't like 'em, cause, I did!
I did play with the damping, and realized right off the bat that I'd quite overdone it initially, less turned out to be more.
Your second question is the interesting one though, as my room is approx. 13 (w) x24 (L) and placement options are very limited. They ended up about 5' apart, about 18" from the rear wall with the listening position about 12' distant.
Probably not ideal.
I'm currently listening to my DIY "Frugel-Horns" with a push/push sub. likely with a pair of Mr. Clark's Austins to come, once my shop get cleaned out some!
The Demitri's I heard were at Dave (P-10's), on an outside deck!
I thought they had a really nice balance, with very well controlled bass.
Best, Don

Hi Don,
Thank you for your reply! I have the Austins in another room and I think you'll find their bass to be unlike anything else. 🙂

Hello,
I have bought the planes from Bob, and currently Im almost finished with the wood/mfd work...
A horn is too complicated, even a quite straight forward solution like Bobs FT-1600 MkII are than not so easy as it might look like.
About the sound I will be able to tell so in two weeks than I should be finished and have some hours of playing them.
Btw: I will as well make the filter for them Bob recommends.
Did you made the filter as well?

I did. I am using screw in backplats so it will be easy to remove if necessary, just make sure you leave enough wire to go straight to the panel.
Hello Adamus might you please send me a photo of the filter? Im not realy sure how to make if I understand it right ... Unfortunately Bob has no photo.
its just the resistor in parallel with the inductor. This unit in series with the driver.
I havent got any pics, sorry.
but have found this

Hello,
would this be correct?
http://hex.dan.sweb.cz//IMAGE_00248.jpg
and then one lead to positive input and the second to the positive cable to the driver?
