Hey Perry,
I have one of these in for repair JBL GTO 14001
its working fine with gain set low. with a output on speaker terminals of 6v ac
current drain on my power supply is around 3-4amperages.
any higher on the gain control and you hear the relay click and amp turns off. if I leave the gain the same. the amp will just keep going on and the off and so on.
turn the gain down one notch and it stays on?
thanks in advanced
kind regards
Richard

ok so I tried turning gain up slow and when I heard a cracking noise coming from L8 AND OR L9 I stopped. when it stopped making the noise I turned it up some more. (slowly) and It cut off at 28vac on a 2 ohm load on the speaker output. with a 60hz test tone running though it. how can I check that L8 and L9 are functioning properly?

Hey Perry,
I have one of these in for repair JBL GTO 14001
its working fine with gain set low. with a output on speaker terminals of max 20vac if gain is turned up slowly
any higher on the gain control and you hear the relay click and amp turns off then if I leave the gain the where it turned off . the amp will just keep going on and then off and so on.

the sound is like a relay clicking really fast. like a electric arcing?
Kind regards

Are you thinking that there is a gain control problem or an output level problem? If you don't think it's the gain control causing the problem, leave the gain set and increase the signal level. Don't mention the gain control if you don't think it's part of the problem. It just confuses things.
What if you leave the gain low and drive a stronger signal into it. Does that allow it to be driven to full power (assuming that your power supply can supply enough current to drive the amp to full power)?

Im not sure on the problem. But i will try setting the gain high when it would normally turn off and then increase signal drive and see if that changes things.
Will get back to you shortly

With 55mv input i can only get about 10v output. Either L8 or L9 is crackling before it goes to protect.
With gain set at half way.
My max input is 2volt from my pc
With pc set to 0 on volume i turn amp on and its fine
I increase volume from pc and get up to 10vac output from amp and i hear the clicking crackling from L8 or L9. Not the relay.
Then it goes to protect about 15vac

Why is it no longer going to 28v?
Do you have a scope?
Do the inductors make noise with no speaker load?

I got it up to 28ish vac by going up on the gain slowely.
With no load i dont hear any noise.
Yes i have a tektronix 2215

When testing on the bench, set the gain to the maximum. That will give you one variable, the input signal level.
Ok.
Any idea why L8 L9 are crackling.
Im working at the moment but when i get home il set gain to max and do tests like that

I don't know. I've seen them do that when the amp was driven to clipping or when the oscillation driven into them was intermittent or excessively noisy.
Is the output clean up to the point where the amp goes into protect?

ok so I took off L9 and unwound it to see if there was damage. couldn't see anything apart from a little exposed bit of wire on one strand that I could see. of the 5 wires inside.
I put a bit of tape over the exposed bit and rewound it and tested the amplifier.
it made the arcing sound more rapidly from L9 but I got up to about 46vac output before my power supply cuts off.
so that is to fault.. anywhere I could buy a new one from?
or the wire that's used inside to rewire this one?
thanks in advanced
and thank you Perry for spending the time helping others
