Fake Nichicon caps! But are they any good?

Counterfeit parts are likely to have an inferior design and/or manufacturing, therefore, may not live up to the specifications of the authentic part. They can harm the end user buy failing in use or causing the circuit not to perform correctly. They can harm the manufacture of the authentic part due to reduced sales or misplaced blame for poor performance. Don't buy "clearly fake" parts!

To tell how good a capacitor or any part is, you need it's specification to compare first. Then you go about comparing the important cap. qualities like its capacitance, leakage current and ESR or ripple current rating, none of which would be simple with an uncalibrated, small-screen DIY scope.

Universal capacitor testers are a thing of the past now but you still need a means of charging the cap. to its working voltage to test leakage. ESR testing also requires a special instrument. Google is your friend if you want to know all the details, what the tests mean and what affordable instruments are available but do us a favour - don't go back to fleabay looking for a fake instrument from the same sort of store you bought the fake caps from 😀 Testing doesn't work that way 😉
