faital pro 3fe22 line arry question

hi everyone
I've noticed a few people making line arrays with this driver and wondered ...
could I instead if having a tall column of 24 drivers could I rearrange them and have 3 columns next to each other of 8 drivers high .
so 3x8 drivers instead of 1x24
what problems if any might this cause please in my mind I feel as if it should work !
would like to make this into an on wall pair of speakers similar to the new artcoustic large model
thanks very much in advance james

Hi,

You can't do that. I am also a big 3Fe22 fan myself. When you put two drivers next to each other you will experience comb filtering. When the path difference is 1/2 wavelength of sound, it will cancel each other due to interference. This will happen vertically as well but you are less likely to be say 30 degree off axis. But that will happen in the horizontal axis.

By the way when you build a line array, your sensitivity increases significantly because of interference. So even at 8piece, you would be close to 99dB/watt, if I am not mistaken.

What do you intend to do for the bass?

An line array less than floor to ceiling is being compromised. Th eidea being that the floor and celing reflections make it seem infinite in height.

EQ is needed to deal with the ~3dB/octave drop in the top end due to the comb filtering mentioned above.

Jordan has promoted their small drivers in a line of 4. As log as you get far enuff away they merge into a single source. There is a 4-driver arrary with FE85 just put up in the awap meet and you can follow that to some real-world experience.

artcoustic ?

basically line array sideways mtm ?

you might want to look up some dispersion graphs of mtm's………..

Then again, may not be nearly as bad 10' away, and more cones = more output.
small cones usually mean high f3's though...………………..

Maybe there is a place for them...……………….

Spitfire 24-12 — Artcoustic
they spec out to -3db@75hz, maybe bull......

they spec out to 100hz.
I think in the case of artcoustic, there is a tweeter involved, so the crossover might be around 2 or 3 kHz. In which case the wavelength is about 4-6 inches. Might not be too bad. So if you worked out the maths assuming they are about 6 inches apart. Probably not too bad. Different matter if you running to 10-20kHz and the wavelength is now about an inch or less...

I'm pretty open minded about the bass driver was going to use the minidsp nano digi 2x8 to do the crossover digitally then send that digital signals to separate av recievers (yamaha dsp a1 or dsp 3090s or pioneer vsxax10 ) to do the conversion and amplification with preouts to a separate mc2 mc650 for the bass. maybe a rcf21 in in an open baffle ?
