In my humble opinion, externally hosted images should not be allowed. Too many old threads look pathetic due to missing images. Cheers!
It can be both bad & good.
The direction is going towards more encouragement of locally hosted images.

I agree with you Adason. After we migrate, linking to external images will be technically possible (using BB code by hand), but discouraged (no buttons to create that code). Drag and drop local image functionality is implemented and works great.

IIRC, drag-drop from external site links-to, rather than imports and re-hosts. Playing now.
Yes, that image is served from www.railwaywondersoftheworld.com, not here. When that site vanishes, the image here will vanish.
I don't think that is a huge problem. But it seems to really be easier than before to make a rotting link.
PRR is correct. When I inspect the image I see this:
<img src="https://www.railwaywondersoftheworld.com/wpimages/wpe512ae0c_05_06.jpg" data-url="https://www.railwaywondersoftheworld.com/wpimages/wpe512ae0c_05_06.jpg" class="bbImage " loading="lazy" alt="Railway Wonders of the World, part 1" title="Railway Wonders of the World, part 1" style="width: 116px" width="" height="">
Yeah - it IS a huge problem and needs fixing ASAP .

One idea i got, i know it will take time and effort, but some really good old threads without images could be resurected by the use of wayback engine.
Image hosting site or the prescription for it is long gone, but the images could be found and recovered using wayback.
Just a suggestion.

Not all images were captured by wayback. It's usually my second resort, but it works less than half the time. (They did cache a complete project of mine, which I had misplaced.)
As for external images "now":
1a) Intercept the drop and stash it locally for linking
1b) Let it go for now, but "overnight" go over the day's new images and re-host locally
The huge problem either way is that external sites can call this "stealing" or "leeching". Taking images without pay or credit, or using external hosting resources without pay or credit.

I agree that images should be posted to the DIY servers and I encouraged that but with the old forum, there was a limit to the file sizes and that's why I had to post some files on an outside server. Are those file size limits going to be relaxed for this forum?
...or perhaps you can post images of any size, and forum software automatically adjust to limit? It should be doable. I personally do not have problem resizing before posting. But some wants to post directly from cellphone, and those are getting bigger. Images, not cellphones 🙂
It depends, and I already complained about the impossibility of straight adding external links without further ado.
I welcome the possibility of adding images straight from my own computer, I often add own schematics, pictures, etc. to illustrate answers , and avoiding Imgur and similar "just to get a clickable link" is GOOD, but every other answer I try to show an image, usually an example, for better end user comprehension, and now I have to first download it to my own hard disk and then reupload it to the Forum.
On average, as wasteful as the old system.
These "examples" in general are of immediate use, not necessary at all to keep them "alive" for years.
My personal view, forum "upgrade" tries to do "everything" the opposite way, be it better or not, just on principle.
Oh well.

Indeed. There is a third party app in place that does this already. It's been testing and is rather good. There should be no more gigantic images and unnecessarily large file sizes to clog up posts.perhaps you can post images of any size, and forum software automatically adjust to limit?
Feedback here is noted. Drag and drop from an external site should not create an external image link - we are trying to discourage it (but still have it as an option for hardcore members that really need to use that feature for a good reason).
What's the maximum file sizes for PDF and video files? Is there a link/page showing the maximum file sizes for all file types (hosted on this site)?
Hi Perry! Long time....
https://www.diyaudio.com/community/help/image-uploads/
However, that is not up to date. I checked and the list is:
7z
7zip
asc
brd
cal
doc
dxo
frd
gif
jpe
jpeg
jpg
mdat
pdf
png
psd
rar
req
sch
step
stl
stp
svg
tar
txt
xlsm
xsim
zip
zma
Maximum attachment size is 10MB.
Maximu image size is 2048 x 2048.
Images are re-compressed in the background some time after posting (so the UI is speedy). Currently using ReSmushIt.
Attachment thumbnails are shown as 150 x 150.

Gonna need a plugin or mod for this I expect.Feedback here is noted. Drag and drop from an external site should not create an external image link - we are trying to discourage it (but still have it as an option for hardcore members that really need to use that feature for a good reason).
