Epos ES11 new cap-resistor, worth it?

We have modded a fair few ES11, 14 and 12. They all respond very well to replacing the original cap with a good film & foil cap. We used Hovland as in the past these were some of the best. For Mundorf, I would go with the Silver Gold Oil if you can afford it. Otherwise, the Supreme will still sound so much better than the original caps.

There are 3 Supremes,which one?
What capacitance and voltage do i need?
I think its 1.5μF but i dont know the voltage.
Do you remember also the resistor's value?I've read
that i have to replace it also

Cheers

It depends on how much you want to spend. I like the cheapest Mundorf Supreme.

I'd take a look at the original capacitor to find the value. No need to worry about the voltage, the Mundorf caps are rated far higher than they need to be.

You wouldn't normally need to replace the resistor, but like I said before, Mundorf Supreme always sounded louder than other caps when I tried them. I'd try them first and if they are too loud, try an an ohm on top of the original value.

Yep, the Mundorf Supreme will give a significant improvement over the stock cap. The resistor (47ohms?) is there to match the output level of the tweeter with the mid/bass driver which does not have any cross over.

It is very likely that when you use a better cap for the tweeter Xover that it will sound louder due to less loss. You can experiment by adding a very small amount of additional resistance but the best way is to do a bit of measuring.

Use a test tone CD at say 1khz and adjust your amp until it outputs say 1 or 2V AC at the speaker terminals. Use a DVM - buy one if you don't have one already. Then measure the voltage at each of the speaker drivers, paying particular attention to the voltage across the tweeter (after the Xover). Note this voltage. Be careful not to short any of the speaker outputs when you are measuring the voltages.

After you have replaced the Xover capacitor with the MSupreme, repeat the voltage test. Ideally, you will want to have exactly the same voltage across the tweeter unit as when measured with the original cap. Tweak your resistor value to achieve this if necessary but don't beat yourself up if you can't get it exactly spot on. If you need to err, best settle for slightly lower voltage (= higher resistance) if you want slightly softer highs.

BTW, you won't just get improved highs with the better cap. The improvement to the bass will surprise you even though the cap is on the tweeter. I won't tell you why....

Cheers,
DF

Wow! This must be secret knowledge...
It makes me think of upgrading my Mordaunt Short's MS 5.30, finally. 😱

Not really and I am sure the answers are out there in the world of Google. You should give modifying your speakers a go but always keep the original Xover components. These will come in handy should you ever want to sell the speakers later and some people do not like modded speakers.
