Having problems with the Empire 598 11 phono cable, second one in 42 years. Looking to purchase a replacement. Empire Scientific doesn't sell parts anymore! Did 20 years ago. Anyway, tried cutting one on my old cables and soldering it to RCA cable. Got hum, so took cartridge off and pulled upper cartridge assembly out. Saw loose tiny copper sheath attached to thin green wire. No doubt ground. Not sure where it goes. Zeonrider posted pics on site, and I can see the tiny piece in pic. Does anyone know where I resolder this ground to? Any help appreciated, thanks. James
Hi James,
You mean that your belt is still in good shape? Mine gave up years ago and it ain't easy to find a new one either.

said that they would make me a belt if I gave them the dimensions. I have not done so thus far.
I have two of these old Empire TT's that I never use anymore since I found a Kenwood KD-5070 direct drive TT.
I recall having a problem with the socket pins underneath where the cable plugs into the tone arm assembly. I think I took a small jewelers screwdriver and squeezed the socket pins together to make a tighter connection. Ever so often I had to do it again.
I am looking at the cable, it has teh two RCA's and the chassis ground "U" lug. The RCA signal shield grounds are separate from each other and the and the chassis ground "U" lug.
I think the plug is a standard 5-pin DIN from the old days.
Without taking my tone arm apart, I assume that the RCA's go directly to the cartridge 4-pins and the chassis ground follows these and connects the tone arm shell, some where inside.
If you are looking at making a new cable parts are still available.

But still think your problem is the pins on the socket inside the tone arm.

Thanks for getting back to me. I'll try it when my new phono cable arrives. I already ordered and received new cartridge wires, that I have to solder in. In addition, I found a fellow in Winnipeg that makes a new phono/RCA jack for $30 including shipping. Also I found this website that may help you get a new belt for your turntable Consumer Electronics Equipment - Rubber Drive Belts
