Hello,
I got gifted a 6" full range paper cone rated 20Wrms, but as it's a bare element it needs a cabinet.
Now I don't know much about this topic so I thought I'd ask all the people who do know what I should build 🙂
I'm looking for a design that is:
Simple to put together
Cheap
Doesn't sound like total crap
Preferably no larger than a meter in any dimension.
This is for a mono system I'm working on, it's going to be living on a desk in the corner of my living room and playing music. The mids are the most important, followed by bass. If I feel it's lacking in highs I'll add a tweeter later. This is not ment to be the highest of fi systems ever created, I just don't want it to be bad.
Thanks for any help!

Greets!
Brand/model? Pictures? Otherwise put it in a ~1.2 ft^3/34 L sealed box and damp to 'taste'. 😉

The element is from a Soundsticks 2 system, I belive the volume of that speaker is around 20L(just a guess from a picture) and ported with a length around 15cmWe need a lot more information than 6”. That tells us little.

I found a 16.4x42.3x26.1 [cm], so 18.1L, speaker box that was about to be thrown out. It's made out of some really nice and dense 2.2mm MDF. I was thinking I could use this, either ported or not ported, but I don't really know how to proceed. These are pretty much the dimensions an online tool gave me for a 6" full range element so I'm hopeful that it would sound alright.
Like I said, not looking for the absolute peak of audio quality here, just pretty decent 🙂
Edit, obviously not 2.2mm MDF, 2.2cm or 22mm or about 7/8" inch 😃
No holes or anything, it's an abandoned speaker project

Here are some pictures of the box I found and the speaker.
Now I'm wondering if I should try for a ported design to replicate the original better or if I should just cut a hole in the front and fill it with foam. Should the speaker be right in the middle? Where would I place the port?
I'm starting to realise how stupid of a question my original post was as I'm learning more about speaker design 😅

Assuming you want to put it on the long side, then there's several 'ideal' offsets with the odd harmonics rule the most common here, so we usually locate it at ~L x 0.349 inside (i.d.) and if you port it, then locate it at ~L x 0.848 (i.d.).
This also applies to left/right offset except use outside dims (o.d.) and some folks use the golden ratios and even mix 'n match them, so lots of acoustic and aesthetic options.

If I place it on the long side it pretty much has to be in the middle in the short direction because of space. Other than that, 0.349xlenght looks pretty good visually too so I'll probably go for that 🙂Assuming you want to put it on the long side, then there's several 'ideal' offsets with the odd harmonics rule the most common here, so we usually locate it at ~L x 0.349 inside (i.d.) and if you port it, then locate it at ~L x 0.848 (i.d.).

I think I will start without a port, it's easier to add that later than it is to plug a hole I feel 😊
Here is my progress!
It's been quite fun to build, not finished just yet but I put it together to make sure everything was good and I've been listening to it for two or three hours at this point 😁
Surprised by how sharp the highs are, plenty of bass too and the mids are nice and clear to my untrained ears! Being used to headphones the sub bass is also just an incredible experience 😋
Had an issue where a chunk of the top of the bass spectrum and the lowest mids were just entirely gone, but the I put it on some feet instead of flat on the table and that was fixed. Darn table, stealing my music! 😂
The bottom of the mids can still get overshadowed by the rest of the music, but I'd still call it good enough for me! Especially with what my goals were. Electronic music is a blast to listen too and my usual assortment of various forms of metal and punk also sound great 😄
Will get some glue and paint before I put it in my living room. Not sure if I'm gluing the sides though, would be nice to be able to get in in the future.
Very happy over all with the whole build so far at least!

Well here is the result! Glued, painted and cat approved 🐱
Definitely doesn't sound as good here as it did in the lab. The bass now has a firm grip around anything I play so I'll probably build myself a top to go along with it in the future.
For now I've just decided that it's alright enough for most music and just not very nice for anything that's not music. Pretty happy with it on the whole and definitely meets the criteria I was looking to meet with this project 😄
