DPL12 w/ PR15

What, no replies?

I'm starting to like the idea of this setup, unfortunately I cannot find all of the specs needed to input it into winisd, so I may be flying blind on this one.

Also, does anybody have any recomendations as to a good amp (not a plate amp) to use on this setup? My research on the dpl12 says it's a little power hungry so I want to be sure to give it plenty of juice.

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks Dan, I will do just that.

Does anyone know of a good non plate amp bridgeable into 4 ohm that would suit this application?

Also, my goal here is to beat out a hsu tn1220 sono tube sub.....am I in the ballpark? I could just go buy the tube, but I'm a bit bored and like to do things for myself.

Thanks,
Chris

Having helped a friend build a DPL12 in a 75 liter sealed cabinet I can vouch for the performance of this driver. Very nice and controlled, easily worth the few extra dollars over the Shiva. The PR'd cabinet should provide a little more bottom end while maintaining cone control.

So, is this thing gonna shake the room, or what??

I've gotten myself confused with wiring. With that Apex amp, do I bridge it down to 4 ohms (it does not say that it is capable of this, though), then wire the dual voice coils in parallel? Is there really a need to go out and find more power, or will this thing outdue the HSU?

I really do not have a good reference for subwoofers (I've demo-ed an sunfire true junior and a velodyne cht-12 in a store) my father has a p.o.s. mitsubishi and my friend has a polk setup, but none of them "shake the air" like HSU are known to do (at least that's what I read).

I'm looking for a "shake the air" kinda sub.....something low but controlled. I'm not sure if I'm headed in the right direction, any help would be great.

Thanks,
Chris

So in looking at a few amps availabe from acoustic-visions.com I've noticed the the apex senior, the PE300-794, Rythmik Audio 350, and Adire Audio AVA250 all apear to be the same amp, can I go wrong picking any of these?

I would really prefer to use a more powerful amp with this box, but can't seem to quite find anything in the 200-250 dollar range. All of the DJ amps seem to require an external crossover (where I have even less knowledge). I also noticed that many of them list their frequecy response at 20 to 20k Hz.......Won't I be missing out on some of the lows then? Also there are the aesthetics of DJ amps.......

Anyway, can anyone help me out here?

Thanks,
Chris

PS Thanks for being so patient with a newbie.

"Excellent, now the only question is, should I go with this or just go ahead and upgrade to a 12" Brahma?"

I have a Brahma sub. There are some things you should consider. It is difficult to find (I think) a power solution for the Brahma when used as a home sub. It wires in series into 4 ohm, but can suck down a lot of power. Also, I am just getting around to building a passive radiator box (currently vented). The Brahma 12" requires two PR-15. You can find a discussion about this by searching for Brahma vent dimensions.

I don't mean to discourage you with regards to the Brahma. It is a really nice sub, just a little hard IMO to convert to home use.

Yeah, I think the brahma is a little to much for me right now. I think I'll stick to the pr15/dpl12.......

I wrote adire and asked if I am able to increase the dimensions of the box by 2" to increase performance (and to make up for amp space if I use a plate amp), but have yet to receive a response (they did get me all the specs I needed yesterday).

Also, I just need to settle on an amp......I'm thinking about grabbing one of the 350w I mentioned earlier (I think they're all the same) or maybe upgrade to the 500w from parts express.....any advice?

Thanks
Chris

Early in the thread you stated you wanted an external amp. What will you be using for a crossover? I've found that I like active crossovers with a 24db slope for subs. If this is just for HT than it's less of an issue but for music it may be more critical. Much easier to integrate and control. There are some plate amps that offer 24db slope XOs, might be worth checking into.

Unfortunately I have not been able to find any external amps to my liking. The dj amps all have a heck of a lot of power, but also require a xo and start to get up there in price compared to a plate amp (not to mention the aesthetics of a dj amp).

If I could find a good external amp and xo that are reasonably priced and not to cumbersome or ugly, I'd opt for it over the plate amp. Unfortuanately I can't seem to find anything.

Well after a little looking , I came across some high praise of stryke audio.

I'm intrigued by the thunder 12.3 system (av12, 3ft^3 box w/ 2-15pr's). I was thinking maybe doing it instead of the dpl12/pr15 combo.

Am I getting a little out of control or is this a good "upgrade"? I think I've settled on the parts express 500w plate amp (never can have enough power). My goal is to be able to build something that I will not have to upgrade as my living arrangements change (i.e I get a bigger place).

So, anybody have any thoughts, or is this just a personal preference on which system to go with?

Thanks,
Chris

What Happened?

Chris,
This thread just kinda stopped and I was wondering how/where you ended up. I am seriously considering going the DPL12/PR15 Kit route with a Rythmik 350SE and building the enclosure per the Adire drawing. From what I've been able to gather from all the post across many threads, the driver and the amp are exceptional. I'm interested in hearing a real world reaction to this design/implementation.

I eventually ended up going a pretty different route. I was originally building a 5ft^3 EBS around a Stryke AV12, when I found a Styke audio HE15 box with dual 18" PR's - which I bought. Until I am able to experiment with what will work best in my home (which will not be for a few more months - I'm still on a military deployment), I decided to use the AV12, plate amp, and semi completed box to make a 1ft^3 sealed box. So far I like the sound, very controlled and low.

Sorry I can't comment directly on the DPL12/PR15, it definately sounded interesting though.

Chris

PS Here are some pics of my subs ....I built the small, unfinished one and I purchased the larger sub that is finished in black formica.
