downgrading filter caps, will it work?

I have a yamaha power amplifer. Problem is the filter caps need replacing. They are 22000uf($100each) These are a real pain. I was wondering if replacing these caps with 10000uf or even 8000uf would work. (100V) Any suggestions. ...

Caps

Yes, smaller caps will work. However, you will have poorer transient response, specially with lower frequencies. As well, the amplifier will clip at 1 to 2 db lower power than before. The amplifier will have poorer definition in the low frequencies. The term we have for it is "The bass sucks".

Basically, you will be converting a good amplifier into a cheap amplifier

If you mean replacing the 22000 uF by a single 10000 uF, then by lowering the capacity you're increasing the ripple on the rails. Just how much this will afect sound will depend on how the rest of the amp was designed, so unless you know what you're doing its a bit of a gamble. If you're really unlucky you could end up with a hi-power buzzing machine.

what im after is a cheaper solution than the $100 caps, Two 10000uf caps amount to over 100 anyway, so that wont work. just like four 5000 will amount to over 100. I just bought a new amp. and it has a 8700uf cap in it, it is very lacking on the bass. Its rated at 300w but that ********. I was quite annoyed by that. CYA

You need to pay attention to total ripple current ratings.

Its generally true multiple common value capacitors are
cheaper than one large unusual value capacitor.

You can achieve very high ripple current rating with
parrallel capacitors.

Try and obtain a batch of capacitors surplus with the right
voltage rating and parallel up as many as will fit in the space.
