I currently have a Gary Dodd built, Hypex UcD400 based amplifier powering my Polk Audio SRS 2 speakers. It feeds them 400wpc from its balanced and overbuilt power supply and sounds very nice. Here is what Gary said about the amp:
This amplifier was built into and old Adcom GFA-555 chassis for a GR-Research Class-D Amp Comparison contest; and won! The rear plate has been remade out of 3/8" thick aluminum for rigidity. It is based on stock Hypex UCD-400 modules. The power supply rails are plus/minus 60 volts coming from an 800VA transformer, dual windings feeding two full wave rectifiers in a pi configuration; the bottom toroid has been included in the center is the main transformer. There is a 18mh 16A toroid choke on each side of the main transformer, one for each rail. There are four 6800uf/80v Nichicon capacitors on each side of the chokes for a total of 54,400uf per rail. You'll notice another large toroid on top of the main toroid, that's for the full balanced power supply that is built into this amp. There is also an input filter on the IEC connector into the fully balanced toroid. That's how this amp creates the great sonics that it does. It makes 200 watts at 8 ohms and 400 watts at 4 ohms continuous; actually it measures more than that and is incredibly quiet! Great for driving a pair of Magnepans or another low impedance, hard to drive pair of speakers while maintaining great sound quality. -- Gary Dodd
For those of you who have compared Hypex and ICEpower, would a move up in power to a pair of ICEpower 1000ASP also be an improvement is sound quality? I've built a 250ASP based amp a few years ago, but my aural memory isn't that long. 😛 Any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated!

It looks to me like the Hypex UcD400 boards are stock, but I haven't had experience with other Hypex modules either.
I would really like to compare this against the 1000ASP modules and see what the high and low points are.

I've figured out that I can't use ICEpower based amps with my speakers, so that would be a bad comparison. Thanks!
