Do I need a recone?

I bought these Hemp Acoustics 8” coaxials at a very low price. Is the damage to this cone mostly a cosmetic consideration? These are essentially radian coaxials with a hemp cone. I want to start dialing in the dsp, but I read somewhere that a horn needs to have a smooth surface to work properly.

Would really rather avoid a recone since the cone in this material is not available.

Looks a pretty good driver if it's anything like these:

Crossover circuit there too. Should give you an idea what needs doing to the response, if you run a sim of it.

Don't see anything there that looks fatal. Smoothness requirement really means anything on a par with wavelength will have an effect, and that is not the case here.

I must have been bored, but had a look at this suggested box crossover for something like your driver:

Hmm... that's a funny looking thing. Not how I would do it. Not what Eminence would do either with a concentric on one of their stock 2.5k crossovers.

What it attempts to do is cross pretty low around 2kHz. Impedance is TERRIBLE. Notches attempt to fix basic design errors.

The main event for you with a DSP filter is probably about second or third order around 2kHz and a lot of attenuation on the tweeter. No idea what polarity comes out at.
