DIY Virtual Reality System?

I know it's probably crap but......

Have any of you guys ever seen one of those DIY VR kits those phony 150" TV companies give away free with their program? I've never actually seen the VR kit myself and I don't know what the project is all about.

Anyone know anything about it or if the plans can be found for free here on the net?

I've searched around for a while but have'nt found any.

time for a permanant thread?

I would like to move that a permanant thread is created with a subject line similar to:

150" ebay screen projectors

Then any of us who have actually tried it can post our results there. But by making it permanant, it could be right there at the top of the forum and hopefully most of the noob's will see it and we can this type of question in the bud before it even starts.

Projecto7, I think I answered your question about 2 days ago when someone asked about the 150" thing. I've bought one, it wasn't "VR" but it wasn't "Plasma" either -- the way that they are advertised.

For the most part, the instructions are just two boxes. One to fit around a TV, and one to fit inside the first. put the cheap fresnel that they send you in the smaller box, and slide the smaller box in and out of the larger box to focus.

If you really want to see the instructions that they sent me on cd, email me and I'll try to find the cd again.

Hey KC,

I apologize for the confusion that my question may have caused, but I am actually fully aware of the 100"TV scam as I became abreast to it a long time ago.

The question is actually directed towards a "Virtual Reality Device" plan that these companies give away as a free bonus for buying the 100" TV junk.

I was wondering if anyone had actually seen the "Virtual Reality Device" plans and could tell me if they can be found for free on the net?

Anyone with some information about that please post it!

That vr thing is just another scam, there are fresnels that are made to be put in front of your tv so that you are looking at the fresnel not the tv, and the tv is behind it, so your tv is supposed to be bigger, they are made for the visualy impaired, ne way the people who decided to set up this retarded scam, they used one of these fresnels and thats how they first discovered the whole projection idea, but when somebody else made their plans, they first decided to see what the fresnel looks like in its original form of use, ie the visually impaired thing, and they said wow that looks 3-d so they decided to add on to this retarded scam that has ripped so many of us off and has also been what started us on this wonderful diy obsession/adventure and brought us her, i also second the motion for a permanent thread about this subject!

Hope it helped!

There is a way using fresnel lenses to make your computer monitor picture look 3-d. There are some links on the internet for guys doing this who are really into high quality flight simulation. In this situation you are not using the lens to project a big screen but to create a stereoscopic effect.

It may be this is what they are advertizing or they are just thinking of projecting a large picture from a computer monitor and then you have cheap as it gets virtual reality.

Saw this and it made me think of this post...

The ELumens VisionStation projection TV system

In this system, the LCD projector has a wide-angle lens that projects the image on to a hemispherical screen. The viewer gets the feeling of being inside the projected image. Typically, a computer drives the images on the projector, and can be used for engineering or simulation purposes as well.

I thought that is kind of a cool idea. I wouldn't mind playing Unreal Tournament and having guys jump out from beside me. I bet that would be pretty crazy.
Although I agree with you that if it's something someone is selling on eBay it's probably some crap.

That link is also just a really good article on Projection TV and how it works. I found it interesting.
