DIY Greenhouse
A greenhouse off the south end of my house has been in the plans since i 1st sketched it some 20+ years ago.
The 1 upside of the series of storms that have kept us power-free for 12 days (so far) in December at least have provided some raw material.
I'll post a few highlights, entire picture show is here: http://p10hifi.net/planet10/treeShow/treeShow.html
The last storm was a windstorm. We live at the top of a mountain pass (at least what passes for mountains around here) and a single gust est in the 180km/hr range uprooted a large number of trees (we were able to scavenge about a ton of firewood from the ones across the main road). 2 that came down were fairly old firs. They came frightenly close to hitting my parents house (across the driveway from my house -- we are responsible for the eldercare).
This root-ball is about 12 ft across -- leaving behind a hole with bare rock at the bottom. My truck and the trailer (unfortunately not destroyed by a falling tree) give some context for size.
and this is of the 2 trees across the front yard (at least 3 smaller trees came down on our property as well). The pole in the front is part of a scalveged telephone pole that we will use as a fencepost (one tel pole provided 3 fenceposts)

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Until recently (ie the huge forest fires in Kelowna) removal of trees was discouraged. And my dad grew up where every tree was planted so they are very precious to him.
We have taken some down, and this latest will allow for more to come down.

I'm against hunters justifying their actions by telling they regulate fauna and in this case nature also proves to be perfectly able to take care of itself. Only, the risk is higher with a house in the neighborhood.

We're getting hammered by wind and rain again today, Dave, but, I picked up a generator this am. "Murphy's Law" says that when you've prepared for something, specific, something entirely unforseen is likely to happen.
That tree by the house---SCARY!

We have a buddies 5.8 kW generator at the moment -- it is helping keep some sanity.
I'm looking at buying a Honda 1 or 2 k unit. Small, quiet, efficient -- unlike the one we are borrowing.

on the bright side... your trees may have fallen, but you are in a beautiful setting that some of us can only dream about 🙂
My pee tree is gone?
Well it left a nice big hole for me to use.
Buckle down Dave and all you islanders, it happening again tonight. Hope all is well with you and Ruth. And Don and Chris and Scott and Jason and... whom have I forgot?

Hey Guys,
I just got a generator, it's the first time I've been able to get the 'puter going since Thursday. Out in my area they're talking about anywhere from Christmas Day to New Years before they get the power restored. Had my rear window of my car replaced today, a branch had come down and smashed it during the storm. Sure hope that all of you in the Great White North are OK.
If I had known that was Cal's pee tree, I certainly wouldn't have parked next to it this Summer :^) I wondered why my car was suddenly stricken by "Rapid Rust". I had thought maybe there was a Sasquatch in the area, it's good to get that cleared up. Wait a second, Cal's kinda a big hairy guy isn't he? Come to think of it, have anyone ever noticed that whenever a Sasquatch is spotted, Cal never seems to be around. Hmmmmm...
Best Regards,
TerryO
