Are there any rules of thumb on how far away a turntable should be placed from the receiver? I am looking at about 15 feet. Just thought I would ask before I bought a 20 foot cable.

If you mean a regular turntable with a magnetic cartridge, that's a low level signal that's sensitive to capacitance. I wouldn't go more than the length of the leads the table came with, or about 2.5-3 feet.
