Disappointing MP3 quality

I was at my sister's house and wanted to show to her and her husband how the theme song from Sudden Impact by Lilo Shifrin - the orchestra, which used some of the earliest synthesized drums and sampling compared to the latest music using sampling at the Billboard Music Awards that was playing that same evening. Btw, Lilo Schifrin's creative use of electronics effects, even using crude early 1980's technology, killed anything Billboard put up.

My brother in law played a downloaded MP3 version - and basically it sounded like crap - disjointed chunks of sonic spew - compared to the official soundtrack version from the LP, CD or on DVD. I don't really see the point in arguing whether the downloaded MP3 version was 128 or 192 Kb/s - it's what's out there for people to listen to, and from what I heard, the soundtrack sounded like semi-articulated garbage rather than the brilliantly composed and very well played actual song with all its diverse elements.
