I built a planet10 MarKen 10pT that I'm using as a desktop speaker now and I enjoy it, but I'd like to build something new and would like to get a little more extension in both directions. I can sacrifice some sensitivity and go slightly larger in the cabinet dimensions. The Alpair 7p is on sale at madisound right now, so I'm thinking a 19x12x11" ported box with the Alpair 7p and ~8" woofer crossed over in the 150-300Hz range. I'd like to get down to 35Hz if possible. Looking for woofer suggestions or someone to tell me this is an awful idea as I'm just learning about speaker design. The Satori MW19P-8 seems like it could be a good fit, but is fairly expensive. I'll use something in that price range if there's nothing a little cheaper that works well. Thanks for your help.
Maybe work up a version of this:
10F/8424 & RS225-8 FAST / WAW Ref Monitor
I am on the other side of your situation, as I have an RS225-8, but no wideband to use it with. Madisound is out of the 10f. Will probably get one from Falcon or wherever I can find it.

I looked at that thread and then forgot about it, that Dayton looks amazing for the price. Thanks!
The Visaton B80 is also another option as the wide-band driver for the XRK971 designed RS225 FAST TL.
Please note that in X's design the cross-over is around 900 Hz IIRC.
Btw pingpongcomputer, the FAST speakers you are planning to build - these will be used in far-field I guess?

Assuming that you are considering the RS225 FAST TL, not sure if a large floor-stander in near-field flanking a work-desk will give you the best results.
I was just thinking of using the woofer from that design paired with a markaudio alpair 7p in a 1 cubic foot bookshelf speaker on my desk.
If I understand correctly, you are planning to use the woofer as a standalone unit, rather like a "sub, but crossed higher?
If you are planning to use the mid-tweet and the woofer together in 1 cu.ft. cabinet, then you need to model the woofer for 1 cu.ft. and see if it works; you also need keep the wide-band unit in a separate chamber so that the woofer does not inter-modulate it.
Please note that the Alpair 7P has a particular frequency response curve (coloration, if I may use that term), that a number of DIYers on this forum did did not like.

Yeah, the A7p wouldn't be my choice, unless you like a presentation similar to some or the Fostex FE series drivers. They do mellow a bit after several hundred hours.
For a 2-way, I'd go with the Alpair 5.3 for the mid-tweet. They're in stock at Madisound, and cheaper that the 7p anyway.
jeff

This is what I was thinking for the enclosure. The drawing is to scale with the 7p on top and the Dayton 8" and a 2" port below - The 5.3 would be a little smaller as the top driver. I haven't actually heard the 7p, just looked at the frequency response chart and wishfully thought it would sound like the 10p with better high frequency extension. The 5.3 looks like it would work fine if that's what sounds better.
edit: rechecking with WinIsd it looks like the port will need to be 2.25" to avoid chuffing, 2.5" would be better but is too long for the box, unless I can use flexible tubing for the port and curl it around inside the enclosure?

Hello, I'm looking for the same question, did you already choose the bass driver?
