Designs in the 100-300 dollar range for multichannel home theate?

Hi everyone,

First post for me here. I'm expanding my home theater and am exploring my options for the extra amps and speakers involved. I am looking at adding an additional 12 channels (thanks to Atmos/DTS:X).

One option is to diy my amps although I have not done much soldering before. I've seen the NC400 builds and could certainly do that, but those appear to cost around $800 per channel when one adds in all the costs.

Are there any Class D amp designs that run about 100-300 dollars per channel, preferably towards the lower end of that range?

My priorities would be:

1. Audio quality surpasses what I can buy commercially (e.g. Rotel RMB-1512) for an equivalent price
2. Minimum of 100 W into 8 ohm loads
3. Reliability
4. Doable for a guy like me - good at all diy and a seasoned woodworker, but never dabbled too much in electronics

I could build this as either one or two large multi-channel amps, although if I well understand acoustically I will be better off running longer ICs and shorter speaker cables. So I am expecting that I would end up positioning each amplifier close to the speakers, which will all be hidden on walls and ceiling behind acoustically transparent cloth.

Are there any amplifier designs that I should be considering? In case it makes a difference I live in Switzerland, where I can get the 12-channel Rotel (Class D) for the equivalent of $2400.

Best,

Dave M

Thanks both, I've taken a look at threads now on both these designs.

The MDA-400 looks particularly interesting. What a shame the designer was banned. There also seems to be a dearth of listening tests done, at least on this forum. I have wound through the 64(!) page thread on his designs and am quite intrigued. More to learn but many thanks for these steers.

Best wishes,

Dave M
