Compare to all other preamps 😉
The reason I ask is that I have never had a chance listen to it.....

Hi ACD,
How can I answer that?
They can be better than many and not as good as some. It is a worthwhile preamp. Sometimes cost has no relation to performance, so this one may turn out better than you expect.

Hi Chris 🙂
Some older pre- and power amps has either good or bad reputation 😉
Did a search here, however got no matches at all........
Maybe it's rock solid and never needs repair or it's to good to be modifyed... or it's a piece of junk, that no member of this forum had never bought 😀

Hi ACD,
Well, I'm not going to say they are the best. But I have had reasonable luck with Denon designs. They tend to build good, clean circuits without too much silly stuff. Yamaha would be another good one, but they tend to build some circuits in an over complicated way.
Does that help?

I have a PRA-1200 with analog switches, worked very good for 15 years and is still good. I have used it every day since I have TV sound through it. A friend of mine has I think PRA-1000, some model older than mine and it has mechanical switches which are not so good I'm afraid, bad contact nowadays.
The design inside in PRA-1200 is very well done for being a Japan amp. Low noise JFET's, DC-servos etc.
...so if the input selector and the pots are OK it's definitely a good amp if you'll get it cheap.

Hi Peranders
I once also had a PRA-1200 - nice sounding pre 🙂
I could be interesting if somebody has the schematic for the PRA-1000 😉

Hi AC,
Hi Per-Anders,

Then you should know they always decide to make one circuit overly complicated. Otherwise good product.I know the old Yamaha
Ahhh Ha! So you've never looked under the hood! 😉 They did sound okay.and has always been fond of them
Hi Per-Anders,
That's what I was trying to get across. I wouldn't mind a schematic either. I have a pair of Marantz 3650's. The switches are bad on both! 🙁 Otherwise excellent product.The design inside in PRA-1200 is very well done for being a Japan amp. Low noise JFET's, DC-servos etc.

Chris;
No electronic product has never been in my home for more than 3 days before it has been opened 😉
I agree.... The Yamaha's are a bit overstuffed, but as you state;
They sounded ok 😉

From all sources I think 😉
Here on diy, local ebay and other places like that plus from some wholesellers....
Major problem is that it's difficult to get same cases again unless you want to pay full marked price 🙄

Denon PRA-1000
Pretty mediocre in those days(1984), better off with a Lux C02.
Nicer built and better sound.
The 1986 PRA-1100 and 1988 PRA-1200 cost 1/3d less than the 1000 but much better build Q.
(i've got batman ears, too young to have heard any good Yamahas, even the Anniversary 10.000 series were screamers)
Jacco;
Is your experience that the PRA-1000 is not good ??
If so in which way particular??
It may be an object for mods 😉

Hi ACD,
Some mods are more extreme than others though.
The C-02 is a very good preamp. The C-05 is much worse by comparison (I own one, so I can talk). The 3650 and SC-9 are the best preamps I have heard yet, but then again, I haven't heard a Blowtorch. 😉
I believe that the PRA-1000 either sounds good (not too bad) or can be made to sound very good. At the very least you'll get a good case and knob set.

Hi Chris;
I once had a Yamaha C2....
That was quite good sounding 😉
Maybe I should go for that, however I can get the PRA-1000 for app. $60 and was currious if that maybe was a way to go including mods...

Hi ACD,
I do have this preamplifier, but not the schematic, sound is clean but there is a lot of scope for Mods. It has a Noble pot, torroidal power transformer. Line stage is built around LM4560 with 2sk389 in input stage and mosfet/BJT output buffer stage. This buffer stage is servo controlled. This all I can trace. You can replace the opAmp with better one and convert the output stage to a discrete diamond buffer one. Only problem with this preamp is it won't fit in standard 19" racks unless you remove the wooden side panels.

Hi ACD,
For $60.00 GO FOR IT! I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it was close to me. If nothing else, it's a great case and pot.
