Has anyone found the reason why this CD player will not read the TOC of some CDs.

It is very simply because the DCD-S10/3000/1650R use a cheap OEM Sony transport with a Sony KSS-240A laser unit. It was not at all designed to handle any deviation from standard redbook CD format. If it even plays CD-R's, it is only by pure luck.
If you install a brand new KSS-240A (probably dalbani.com or dalbani.uk.co has them cheapest), or try several new ones, you may get lucky & find one able to read hybrid & 5.1 discs, but again only by pure luck.

Many thanks stephensank, thought it must be something to do with laser mech.
At the moment, the output of the one fitted is up to spec. (R/F envelope amplitude) and the sound with ordinary CDs is good that I'm loathe to change it.
I heed your advice though.
