I came across a denon dcd325 cd player in a pile a discarded components and thought I´d have a look and see if it was worth fixing. It´s not a great player but I thought it might be a good learning experience. The laser is a kss 240a from sony that I´ve it is quite common. The display works and the drawer opens and closes but there is no response from the laser or the spindle motor. I replaced all the electrolytics on the circuit board and still had no response. I´ve disassembled the laser assembly and applied 3vdc to the spindle and laser motor and both work fine and are very quiet. Is there a chance that the laser is toast and would this explain why the rest of the assembly does not work? I´ve also seen that the flex cable for the laser can be a problem but I´ve checked each contact for continuity and it was fine. I´ve also removed and gone over all of the semiconductors (regulators etc.) on the main (only) board and they are all fine. Does anyone have a suggestion for me or is this one for the junk bin? It would be fun to see if I could get it running.

Does the lens perform a focus search operation when the drawer closes with no disc in ? You should see it move up/down three times or so.
If so the laser is possibly faulty... you should see it emit dull red light (can be very faint) when looked at from around 30 centimeter or so which is a safe distance during this focus search operation.

Thanks for the reply Mooly. 🙂The lens would move in and out once if I pressed play right after closing tray. There was some light coming from the lens but for only a second. It now is completely dead. I was wondering , because of the start-up sequence, if the laser would be responsible for the spindle motor and laser motor not working. Is the focus and TOC search operation the thing the player does after closing the tray and would this account for the rest of the transport not working? The player was doing bar duty for 8 years or more so it´s quite possible that the laser is a dud.

Yes... the tray closes and the lens moves up and down 3 times (Focus search). The disc is stationary... it's easier to focus like that rather than a moving target. If focus is found the FOK (Focus OK) signal is sent to the system control and the disc run up to aproximately the correct speed. At this point the servos kick in and keep the disc at the correct (continually altering) speed.
That was a HUGE help. It´s not a large expense so I´m going to order a new laser and see what happens. It´s the only thing that i can´t test (without service manual) ,and from the information you´ve given me, seems to be the culprit.
It has to be worth a try... although it seems strange though that you mention the laser did emit light at first ? yes .... and now nothing. As you have done a lot of work on it, replacing caps, checking semiconductors etc it might be worth rechecking all again 🙂
When pickups fail the laser often still emits light.
If you get a manual you need to check the supply to the pickup and the "LD on" line (Laser Diode on) that should go high during the focus search operation.
