I have two sound cards that use the terrible LM386 chip amp for headphone output, and I'd like to mod them with some higher quality chip, if there is one that supports asymmetric supply. Is there one?

There is a chip called TBA820M (8pin) which delivers roughly 1W with asymmetric voltage. I remember that it has acceptable sound quality (better than the lm386) but needs quite a few external components, more than the lm386...
TDA1308 if you can still find it... saw a comparison table yesterday... these were also the chips that swung the highest level output
If one can believe the application notes at Ti, most opamps can be used off a single rail supply.

I have had the idea to order it, and show my brother
how small a fairly good Headphones-Amp can be made 😎
with modern IC technology.

The easiest solution ist to get hold of an elder Acer CD-ROM reader, it contains a Philips TDA 1038, other CD-ROM players from Samsung, contain PT2038, which has same pinout and characteristics.
I used such chip to repair a Noxon2audio internet receiver. I used a small saw and cut out the amplifier part.... it works on 5 volts and has very low hiss.
