DC on second DVC VC

I have been doing a lot of searching for info on parameter changes for different DVC setups and if I have read it all correctly parallel or series changes only impedence and I presume driving each coild from a seperate amp channel would also have no effect.

However it appears that one can vary the Qes between the dual coil value and 2 times the dual coil value by puting a resistor across one coil and driving the other. This got me to thinking that one should be able to push Qes farther in either direction by biasing the unused coil with a DC current. If the current were oriented in a way to increase the effective power of the magnet then the Qes should be driven even lower than when both VCs are driven with the audio signal. Is this correct? Would we not then have some of the advantages of a field coil design?

If I have it right then what is the down side (no free lunch)? Just power handling and efficiency?
