can you go from a componet (cr\cb\y) output on a DVD player to a vga input on a monitor? I bought a monster cable unit but it is not working and I am not sure if it is bad or the conversion does not work. the picture is mostly green and during some secnes the top will curl. Any help?

There are some units that do convert the composite to rgb, but your best bet is to simple use a pc to play the dvd though it--in most cases the quaility will be better then a stand alone dvd player.
What if this isn't really an option? I do not want to buy a new PC and with the horsepower, plus a sound card with an optical out.
Beside the 200 dollar adaptor boxes, do I have any other options?

Those are pretty much your only options, but I do have a wacky alternative. You can buy an Xbox and there's a way to make your own DIY VGA output for it. And there's some legal hacking software to "enable" progressive output. Check out www.xboxhacker.net. It's still $200, but you'd be getting an Xbox out of it. There are also DVD players that have VGA outputs.
