Cyrus CD XT SE laser mech. replacement!!

Newly acquired Cyrus CD XT SE (transport) is failing to load/disc error.
Purchased what I assume is a generic laser/mechanism to replace the cheap 'original' Sanyo SF-HD850 that I assumed to be the culprit for the failure.
(Needless to say....removed diode protective solder 'blob')🙂

Disc is once again, drawn into the mechanism....but fails to spin/load.
Replacing original mechanism.....does same...no spin/load.

Possible of course, that the 'new' laser isn't working??
What about the flexible 'ribbon' connector to the laser....do they fail over time??

Given that the mechanism is accessed from the underside of the Cyrus...does anyone know how I can check the working of the laser please??

Does the laser light when the deck finds the innermost point by the spindle motor?
The easiest way to check is a piece of thin paper placed over the landing point of the turntable and in a darkened room, insert a disc and look for the red flashing glow.
The five point system for all CD/DVD players is;
1/ Insert disc
2/ Find TOC point on disc
3/ Laser lights and focus is achieved
4/ Spindle motor spins up
5/ TOC is red
6/ Disc is ready
If any of these fail, the TOC cannot be read and the machine will not work.

Thanks Jon.

Haven't tried the darkened room bit yet!
But...it doesn't appear to reach #4 on your list.
Suspect not getting to #3 either.

Laser assembly moves towards centre...then zip!! 🙁

Update....got a bit further I think.

Removed mechanism...and maintained electrical connections.
Flipped it 180 degs onto it's back, and supported it over the main PCB's.
Now I can see the laser assembly in the common orientation...lens up!
Placed a dummy disc in the slot mechanism...and laser now fooled into operation.
I can observe the lens attempting to focus, and see red laser light flashing...on BOTH laser mechanisms....but no attempt to spin up on either of 'em.:scratch1:

Any idea what this is telling me please??

Here's a pic....

In the event that my description wasn't up to par in my last post...thought I'd include a pic to show how I can now observe the laser.

Both laser mechanisms move to the centre of disc...attempt to focus...can see lenses flash red in same way.
Curiously...with a disc placed on the spindle, the new mechanism just remains still, while the old appears to 'hunt'...flicking disc in both directions before giving up and stopping.

Hooray!!!!

Found the English/Chinese 'manual' for the HD850...no practical info on setting up the sleds!!
Experimented with mech....'out of the machine', and did the best common sense adjustments I could make by eye....and Hey Presto (does anyone actually say that anymore? 🙂 )....a CD Transport that now loads/reads/plays.
Assume this may still need further tweaking...but a great start!!

Thanks to members for their inputs😀
