I have a nice speaker, however I'd like it to have a better bass response. I was hoping I could get a relatively small receiver, to play the audio through the speaker and have a subwoofer working with it.
Any ideas?
Keeping cable count down to one, possibly two would be wicked.

Cheap and effective bucket subs rock!
Check out Ed Schilling's FFRS Mark 4:20 Peerless 8" sub in a 5-gallon bucket. I just built four of them to add to my open baffle mains and they work surprisingly well. You should have a high-current Class D amp for the sub for best performance but for a quick and easy sub for under a hundred bucks each they're hard to beat. Tested pretty flat from 25-100hz!
All you need is a 5 gallon bucket and lid, some rubber feet, 25 lbs of concrete, a dozen 3" decking screws, 8 sheet metal screws, silicone caulk and a Peerless 830667 subwoofer ($66 each at Parts Express; free shipping if you buy two).
Build the FFRSMark 4:20i. plans/parts here!
Hope this helps!
I'll be posting a more detailed build report in the subwoofer forum within the next week or so in case you or anyone else is interested.
Regards, Jeff
