I was wondering, can i make a half second order BP filter? the LP section in the BP will be second order, and the HP section in the BP would be first order?
Yes. You can mix orders.
Have read some articles that advise against it, but I see practical designs on the internet where they do that all the time.

No, it was awhile ago.
Something about symmetrical, (both sides), even order filters being the best for polar response and holding down lobes.
There is a lot to crossover response. Frankly, I just try for a good on-axis response and leave it at that.
