Lucky Me, recently got my hands on a Garrard 401 in quite nice condition. Eventually I'll be fitting my home built unipivot to it but at present I'm debating plinths.
Loricraft now say that huge mass is bad and that a 25mm slab of MDF with damped support towers (naked plinth) is fine.
The Martin Bastin Maxplank plinth (not even sure if it's still available) was a huge block of laminated marine ply with holes machined out purely to give clearance to the workings. No spare voids to resonate.
The slate audio versions used a hollow (top plate and sides only) plinth built from granite.
A recent "Octave Audio?" plinth reviewed in HiFi World was a solid block of MDF.
Has anyone used corian as a plinth material (especially for a 401)and what were your impressions?
After using MDF in a few projects I'm less than taken with its sound (and the dust is hellish, even with a mask and extractor it gets everywhere).
I'm thinking it might be nice as a top plate with a stout hardwood frame but thought I'd throw the question out there.
