That's the copy protection scheme used in DVDs and VHS (I heard it's been used in cable TV too). If you play a DVD or VHS while it's connected to a VCR (and in some cases, LCD panels and TV cards), you'll get a bad picture, usually rolling and turning bright and dark often.
Most DVDs have it, I'd say very few don't have Macrovision. Many VHS tapes use it too. I've used really old VCRs to dub tapes that had Macrovision and the copy was as good as the original, but those VCRs weren't stereo and were pre1990.
