Converting cassette deck to mp3 player

I picked up a 80's Kenwood KX-71RB cassette deck for $5 at Goodwill with the intention of turning it into an mp3 player similar to the type converted by the guy at the "tapeless deck project". It cleaned up really nice, but it has a very dull sound and sometimes only records to one channel, so it's days as a cassette recorder/player are over. Its missing the removable clear cover over the tape well, which is fine since I can "swipe" the smartphone I'll install in the cassette well without having to open the door. So, I'm an amateur at electronics. I've done some basic soldering such as replacing bad components, etc. I'm no EE by any stretch of the imagination! I've built PC's and even completely disassembled/reassembled a car, so I'm not terrible with my hands, lol. If I screw up, I've lost $5 , but I'm sure I'd learn something in the process.
So the guy who builds/sells these at the tapeless deck project removes the cassette mechanism, attaches a small smartphone in the cassette well that displays an animation of a cassette playing. You swipe the screen to change tracks. The audio from the phone is output from both the rear audio jacks and goes to the VU meters as well. A power adapter for the phone is also installed.
I can't find a service manual, but I can post pics of the circuit board. Anyone wanna take a stab at helping me get the audio signal to the led VU meters while not screwing up the audio going to the rear jacks?

thanks!

Main circuit board. Showing wires going to VU meter at the bottom, cables coming from the head on the right, and the rear audio jacks at the top.
