I recently acquired some equipment to, hopefully, integrate into a DIY speaker project.
Proposed system:
Marantz 2285B pre out (consumer) ---> active crossover (pro) ---> 6 channel amplifier (pro) ----> speakers
The 2285B has been with me forever.
AXO(s) .. have an EV DX34a and a Rane AC23
The amp is a Rane MA6S
The question I have is whether or not the 2285B consumer level output will hurt me @ the xo? The 2285B will drive the amp as is ... seems like no problem, but what would/might(?) I be leaving on the table as far as performance and sound quality?
I've seen the following solutions for conversion mentioned here and there:
Aphex 124a
MatchBox HD
Ranes Balance Buddy
Tascam L-40 .. mkxxx .... and so on.
Reading through a couple of the manuals .. (aphex, matchbox in particular) it's not clear that I can use these to level up the preamp section of the 2285B. They more or less just make mention of a cd player, tape deck, etc ... directly plugged into the level interface(s).
Would the preamp overwhelm these kits? ... or would it be just fine .. and if I knew what I was doing, I'd know that?
I'm fairly sure how "noise floor" works and a little about gain structure. I realize raising the level brings everything right up with it ... no free lunches. Gain? .. not sure but it's probably safe to say I'd be right on the (lower) edge. The connections will be pretty short (3') ... not looking for any marathon runs.
What concerns me is getting the device(s) impedance loads right between each other. If they can be happy without any additional hardware ... great. If not, I'd rather go the extra 1/2 foot to make it right. I've read so much theory about digital xo(s) needing this or that ... or not ... my head hurts 😛
I have parts coming to fabricate cables ... should be here in a day or so. Figured it's better to ask my dumb questions before I hurt something.
I hope some of you fellas with hands on experience can shed a bit more light on this for me. I can offer up spec's of any of the mentioned pieces of equipment as well .. if it's needed.
