connecting a passive sub

OK, I have a Kenwood 1080VR which has connections for front, center and rear speakers. it also has an RCA connection for a powered sub. I am using surround speakers from an old Sony home theatre kit, including a passive sub. The sub has ONLY connections for wiring FROM the receiver/amplifier (no outputs to R/L satellites).

Putting aside the option of hooking up a separate amplifier for the sub connection, what is the CORRECT way to get the sub hooked up, where no wiring options exist for the specific purpose?

If you were to use the Sony satellites and subwoofer together as they were intended and set your HT amp to route LFE signal to main front L+R, that would do it. If you are using different main speakers, you could probably do the same regarding the amp settings, but ditch the Sony satellites and just wire the sub in parallel to the new main speakers. This may not be very good though as the sub will probably reach up too high in the frequency band.

However, if you want to run the sub properly, you need to rip the passive crossover out of it and run it off a dedicated amp connected to the HT amp LFE output.
