Computer projector or panel off Ebay

O.K. I've got a OHP (free) but no panel, My question is why should I buy a panel as opposed to a computer projectior, I know a panel is cheaper, bulbs are cheaper, you get the joy of the diy thing, but the projector is more or less a sure thing if you get one with a good bulb.
So i guess what I want to know is how does a OHP and panel compare to a Computer projector as far as picture quality I'm talking about something with a limit of say $500.

All the projector-panels I'm aware of don't cost nearly as much as $500. The best one I'm aware of (Sharp QA-2500) is hard to find but won't sell for more than $300. Price- that's the advantage. You could get a really cheap 640x480 one for $50 or less. The quality issues are mostly on your OHP. What kind of lens is it? What kind of lamp? How bright is the lamp?

Then of course there's what I'm going to do. I plan on buying a high-quality metal halide OHP and hooking up a UXGA LCD to it. This will cost me anywhere between $500-$1000, but the quality will be far beyond any LCD projector in the <$10,000 range.

Sorry to disagree. Getting a good panel is far more important than an OHP. There are hundreds of OHP's available and if you need more light they are relatively easy to modify, or make your own but a panel you cannot alter. You have to get a good one first time. Otherwise its a waste of money.

Your prices seem way too low. I have yet to see a respectable VGA panel for anything like $50. Used to be a year or so ago but not now. Good ones have gone up in price and have got short in supply. I have seen Sharp QA 2500 at $500 and any sort of a decent VGA panel will cost between $150 - $200 eg Nview spectra C. Check out the latest ebay panel listing.

$50 panels

*shrug* I just bought a 640x480 nView Z-Series w/ 32 bit color, S-Video, RCA, VGA and Mac Video inputs for $60 off a friend -- he bought it from an auction here at our school (our technology center got rid of bunches of stuff) for $55. Granted, that was a steal and a half, but that's what I got. Not like it was my talent or anything. Word got around in my hall what I was doing, and I came in from class to find a LCD projector panel sitting on my chair saying that if I wanted it, I could buy it. 🙂
