Hi..

I knew that CMV 1515, 1512 and CT529A have been widely used for diy pj. But, in a local store here, i found CMV CT-522A only.

Anyone use it?
I concern about FFC issues.

I want to make sure before I buy it for my PJ.

Thanks,

edwinyn

I just got my CT-522a via fedex today. I'm going to be building my projector over the weekend with this screen, a Dukane 663 triplet OHP w/ 410 watt FXL bulb, and some blackout cloth for a screen.

I'll let you know how it all turns out and have some pics too!

The CMV 522a is strippable. There's a good writeup or two about it in the lumenlab forums. The positive findings led me to purchase one recently as well. It does appear to be a higher contrast unit and the colors seem right on. Movies in 780p look like heaven on it imho.

Its also an lcd that needs to be handled gently, has a minor FFC issue but its supposed to be very workable. It is reportedly not necessary but the extension cables sold in the lumenlab store fit it perfectly (edge connectors are present). There's also a transistor soldered inbetween the controller card and inverter daughter card; they'll require a "gentle lift" out of the enclosure.

Summary:

The clumsy may want to look elsewhere but the confident can proceed with minimal caution. A worthy contender in the "value" category imho.

Newegg and iCuePC have them at a smart price.

Well, I went with a diylabs design for space considerations instead. So you think I can just go slowly and tear it down without a problem? Is there anything special about the tear down, like special films/layers behind the actual lcd panel or is it just the lights?

Outside of just going very careful its supposedly a straighforward design. Didn't seem like any unusual layers and definitely no film on the lcd.

The monitors controls are attached to the lightbox via an FFC but it can be carefully removed and reattached for PJ use. The speakers are attached with some two pin connector so that should pose no issue.

Here's a diagram of the pic i seen (plz pardon the crude drawing)
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Like i said before, this monitor isn't for the totally feint of heart, a person should be comfortable working with this stuff imho. I'd label this monitor "minor FFC issue" though it supposedly very workable. The ffc's are the standard type sold in the lumenlab store and all edge connectors are present so extending them would be cake (if necessitated by your design). Also, do not forget that the controller card and inverter card are oddly connected by a 4 pin transistor that straddles them, apply caution there as well.

Good luck and let us know how it turned out.... oh yea, whats your email adress Spud? Got something you might want to check out 😉

Wow. Thank you kindly sjetski71, that diagram helps a lot. I'm comfortable building computers and moddings cases, so I'm hopping that will help with stripping the lcd. My email is in my profile, hadn't noticed that it was turned off. 😀

I'm now reading that the cmv 529a has no ffc issues at all. It has 1 FFC cable that doesn't need extending. It seems to have identical specs as the 522a and is a tad cheaper with free shipping here: http://www.icuepc.com/www/productdetail.asp?did=328

icuepc.com also has a 3 dead pixel policy which is much better than most other merchants

Spud, if youy haven't ordered the 522a yet, then i'd probably recommend you get the 529 instead...since it'll be easier to incorporate with different projector designs.

If you've purchased the 522a already, i wouldn't sweat it. It'll just take a more careful touch imho 😉
